Purchase
Jacob Isaacksz. van Ruisdael, Hilly and wooded Landscape with Falconer and Horseman, mid-1650s, signed bottom right: JvR
To mark the 100th anniversary of the Residenzgalerie, Provincial Governor Dr. Wilfried Haslauer facilitated the opportunity to acquire this first-rate painting, the total purchase cost being borne by a patron who wishes to remain anonymous. The signed painting – considered a particularly ambitious and successful early work by Ruisdael – is an ideal complement to the Residenzgalerie collection.
Jacob van Ruisdael is regarded as the most important Dutch landscape painter in the latter half of the 17th century. Contemporaries admired the naturalistic representation of his native landscape. His talent for drawing is also demonstrated in the surprisingly lifelike rendering of trees; particularly in the right-hand side of the painting, their silhouettes against the light background make them the main motif of the picture. In the sky, Ruisdael has used sometimes rough brush-strokes to enhance the dynamic impression of drifting, windswept clouds. This animated cultural landscape shows a huntsman on horseback and a falconer accompanied by dogs. The figures were probably painted by Johannes Lingelbach.
