The Apostle is one of the tone-on-tone paintings of hermits, in which Einsle made a study of 17th-century Bolognese painting, especially that of Guido Reni. Einsle was also influenced by the work of Dutch painter Gerrit (Gerard) Dou, whose Self- portrait in a Window is also positioned in a window recess (Residenzgalerie Salzburg inv. no. 536)
